I am familiar with the C++ programming language, and I have been using it for some time now.

Recently, I have been applying for C++ Software Development jobs, but I feel like there is still so much I need to learn.

When companies such as Google hire a software developer, they obviously put them through some initial training. How/Where can I find a similar source of training material that would prepare me for commercial/industrial software engineering?

I know there is millions of good tutorials on line, but I would rather work through something different. I actually don’t know how an organization training courses in software development would be different to text books. Has anyone been in the same boat – feeling unconfident at the employment stage and then realizing they shouldn’t have been?

I am 16 years old and for years now i have wanted to become a game designer and recently i contacted a company known as train to game to further educate myself, however after thoroughly researching the company i have decided not to take a course from them as they have been accused of being a scam.
As result i am back at square one. I have a new and interesting concept for a game however I lack the necessary skills to take a college course in game design consequently the only way i will be able to create a path into the industry is by teaching myself the necessary skills like learning the correct software and creating a portfolio
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE tell me the best online software for a fps shooter but please could you also include any websites that offer tutorials for them as well.

A family member recently offered me an opportunity to get some training and do some work for her. She has a company that produces sandals and accessories and needs someone to take oringal or raw, pre existing images, graphics and prints and be able to make them work, fit and look nicely placed on the accessories. I need to know what kinds of classes, programs, software, tutorials etc I would need to lean to be able to do this on my own as a free lance worker not in a factory or studio. So basically steps should I take to learn the area of Art conversion for fashion accessories.

Ideally you would get a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design which would require a 4-year course of study in a university.

In a low-rent situation you’ll buy a Mac, the Student-Teacher version of Adobe Create Suite and Adobe Photoshop CS5 Classroom in a Book.

http://www.leansigmamart.com These people offer the most incredible package I have had a chance work with. Live Training with a real person right from your own computer. Knowledge is deep; class is very easy to learn from. 14 week class for ONLY $999.00 that’s $72.00 per week. You will get a free software package worth $1475.00 that has six sigma templates, analysis mentoring, and DMAIC mentoring. WOW!
http://www.georgegroup.com/ These people are very well known and rank high in the six sigma world. They are a very good and reliable but a bit pricey. They offer a wide variety of products.
http://www.6sigma.us/six-sigma-training.php These people cover a lot of different Six Sigma related subjects and are a great place to find resources.
http://www.leancor.com/?trackcode=bizcom These people here cover lot process improvement areas but real good site to learn about the Lean principals. They cover some good manufacturing areas.

I’m 16 right now and so far, the career that seems the best is a software engineer.
I don’t think there is anything I love more than computers.
But I know hardly anything about programming.
If I went to a University, would they expect me to already have knowledge on programming?
People have told me I should try to learn now so it’ll be easier for me later.
I’ve tried teaching myself by reading and watching tutorials and I got no results.
Would I have hands-on training with a professional or would I basically be stranded?
And also, I think I am confused.
I read online that you have to take a lot math courses like Trigonometry, Calculus etc.
Do I take those classes as prerequisites and then go to a University and learn programming?
Or would I be taking those math classes alongside with a programming class?
Or do I take a programming class and math classes as prerequisites? If not, would you recommend taking some classes anyways? Does it look better on my résumé if I took extra classes?
And one more thing, a software engineer is someone who develops stuff like Photoshop, Firefox, Windows, etc. right?
Or is a software engineer someone who programs a robot to do a specific task (opening cans for example)? Or both? Would I have a choice in what I program or does it depend on the company I am working for?

  16. Steve says:

I would not worry too much about not having previous knowledge my first semester of university I had no experience with programming what so ever. I actually did not start enjoying programming until my second year. They don’t expect you to have any knowledge on programming although they do move along quickly.

Usually math are done during your first 2 years where computer science courses do not require any advanced math skills these are done concurrently with first and second year comp sci courses. Eventually you will have to use linear algebra and calculus when it comes to some later year graphics and AI classes.

Employers don’t really care that much if you took extra courses, they usually only care whether you have a BS in Comp Sci or MS in Comp Sci or higher degree. And whether you actually know what they ask you to do.

You can choose what specialization you want to do in your respected field but it honestly does not matter that much by the time you get your degree you should be comfortable enough to do whatever they ask you to do if you don’t you better learn.

Can anyone please advice me on where would be the best place to train up in VB.net? College? Uni course? Computeach? Learn Direct? On your own through reading books? the internet? or somewhere else?

Ideally I feel a good tutorial software would be best. Does anyone know where I can get hold of something like this?

Where do most programmers who did not grauate in a computer related discipline get their skills from? I can never find an employer willing to train you up.

I have worked for five years in VB6 then took three years out and wish to return to the world of programming. But technology has moved on. VB6 is dead and replaced by VB.net. HELP!

  18. DuncanP says:

I have just completed my bachelor’s in computer science at WMU and they had only one elective for VB.NET. Mostly it was C# or C/C++. I know if you go into CIS, you learn more VB.NET. But I feel there is not much sense in attending a university for one language… Although you will definitely learn all the concepts, probably far more then what you want to learn ;-)

I would recommend going and picking up a good VB.NET book and just code along with it. Coding yourself is the number one way to learn the syntex, method calls and so on.

Online you will also find a number of really good sources. While I will not point to individual sites, I recommend just performing a search on”Beginners VB.NET Tutorials” or something along those lines. Another site to look at would be Microsoft’s Developer Network http://www.msdn.microsoft.com

While VB.NET incorporates the .NET framework I am confident that you will soon feel right at home once you get going. Microsoft kept a lot from VB6.

So my recommendation to you is: Unless you are trying to get a degree of some sorts (which can never hurt), just stick to learning via online tutorials or by books. There are tons of resources out there for you. And the more hands on training you do like following examples, the faster you will learn. You always got us on here to help you too :-)

Personal Opinion: If I were you I might avoid learning VB.NET and focus on C# and Java as these two languages are becoming the languages of choice. While VB.NET and C#.NET both use the .NET Framework, I feel C# is for sure a better all around language. Also once you learn C# you will have a good understanding of the .NET Framework and will be able to easily apply your past knowledge in VB6 and pickup VB.NET.

    Hope this helps.

I’m sort of new at Excel. I mean, I know the basics, but now at my job we’ve switched over to Excel 2007 which is very different. I’m looking to buy a CD-ROM teaching guide that’s easy to follow. I’ve found this one on Amazon: Microsoft Office Professional 2007 Video Training Courses by Amazing eLearning (http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Professional-Training-Courses-eLearning/dp/B001F5U8PQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1220627182&sr=8-1)
Does anyone know anything about this tutorial? If not, anyone have any suggestions to another learning program?

    Hi,

I think Bill Jelen (aka Mr. Excel) has the best on line tutorials, and they are completely free. I put a link to the list of the currently available tutorials below. There’s over 100 of them.

I also put a link to the iTunes download in case you don’t already have iTunes (also free), which is required to play the tutorials.

The tutorials are worth the bother of installing iTunes. They’re excellent.
