The Home Winemaker’s Inner Circle
I am wanting to put together a homemade wine fermenter. I do not want to buy the $70-150 kits they sell. I’ve also already seen the pages where they list about 100 supplies you need to buy to make them but I have also seen the pages where you can use household items to make wine. I am wanting to assemble a kit that will make a quality taste but does not have to be great. If anyone knows information or where I can find information it would be very appreciated. Thanks.
Start with the yellow pages and look up “Beer and Winemaking Supplies.” Ask what it costs for a ‘carboy’ (a 5 gallon water bottle), and an airlock. Should be around $20. This and the grape juice are the minimum you need.
From there, you might get a wine kit, purchase fresh ‘must’ (the crushed grapes and fresh juice), yeast and acid blend.
The hardware is the major starting cost, after that you own it and only have to buy the ingredients. Considering that you will be making two or three cases of wine that are worth $60/case and up, it’s a pretty good deal.
Most of those kits include the carboy, sanitizer, cleaning brushes and other essentials to make it easy for you. Some even include the bottles, corks and cork inserter.
I’ve been searching for a new hobby and decided to try homeade wine making. I looked at some online recipes and alot of them call for stuff like campden tablets and pectin enzyme and a bunch of other stuff that just sounds like a bunch of chemicals. I was hoping to learn how to make wine the old fasioned way. I was just hoping someone on here could reccomend a website or maybe a good book or just a few tips on wine making. Thank you.
Hi Chase, You will still need all the proper kit whatever way you want to make it Stuff like fermentation locks and even campden tablets (to refine and clarify your wine). Without all the equipment all you are making is a soup for bacteria to grow. Wine making is not easy, and can be an expensive hobby to start with.Especially if you get fed up with it. You could check online for second hand equipment, there is bound to be lots where people have failed through lack of research or just got bored. If you think the chemicals are bad, you should see what goes into full scale wine production – including antifreeze.
It might be an idea to start with beer or cider making, as you can buy the worts etc. fairly cheap and you need much less equipment. Then when you get your hand in at that you will have some idea. how to go about what goes into wine making. I hope this helps, all the best. Rab
I want to make a barrel of wine. Does the cooper barrel have to be new? Where can I get a barrell close to Memphis TN? I also need instructions on the wine making process.
If the barrel is not new you will carry over what ever the barrel stored before…such as sherry, port, rum, scotch, or gin. In aging wine you want a new one so you can burn the inners to get the burn charititc of the wood
Squeezed purple grapes, got 4 gal of juice and cooked the skins down. How do I make wine out of this?
To make wine you need two things sugar and yeast. Mix your juice with yeast, let it ferment, you have wine.
you’ll need a bucket large enough to handle the fermentation process.
more info on making wine at the link below.
First make a bowel of boiled paddy rice and wait till it cool down to suitable temperature and then mixed with a certain kind of ferment. After one day or so the rice will turn to be a tasteful sweet wine. I wish to know what kind of ferment I should use and where to get it.
First off, if it is whole grain brown rice, you should have it ground a little to expose the center. If you are using white rice, you should be fine. Boil the rice for a wile, to let all the starches seep out into the water. Then you will have to bring the temperature down to about 160f if I remember correctly. Then you will have to add enzymes or malted barley (which contains enzymes) to convert the starch into sugar. At that point, cover it, and let it sit for about an hour to give the enzymes time to convert. After that is done, strain or syphon the liquid into a fermenter. Add whatever yeast you desire, bread yeast will work, or you can use champain yeast. Each yeast has its own unique flavor. Make sure that the liquid is lower than 90f or it can kill the yeast. Let it ferment for about 4 days. Run it through a coffee filter or a wine filter.
Stop by a local beer and wine making store, they should be able to walk you through it and help you get the right equipment.
I’ve heard you can get sick if you don’t do it correctly so if someone with experience could give me step by step directions that would be great. Also, how do you make white wine?
When making wine you do not have to have any yeast. The grapes have their own source on their skin
To use any other yeast will change the flavour of the wine.
To make wine all you have to do is to crush the grapes- without crushing the seed.
Put it in a large jar with the capability of sealing it with a cork or similar (with an air-lock vent)
Store in a dark place at 65 degree F. until fermentation stops or slows down significantly –Approx. 2-3 weeks after which it is ready for it’s first ‘Decanting’
Decanting is the separation of the wine from exhausted ‘Must” ( i e grape flesh and skin)
This has got to be done as soon as the wine starts to clear, or when clarity is good.
The final decanting is often done at the table (or when its poured for drinking)
“Decanting” only means removing any CLOUDINESS in the wine and getting rid of the rest .
Great care must be taken during decanting to prevent any of the must from mixing with the clear portion already decanted, or you’ll have to start all over again.
Cork LOOSELY for 2-3 weeks before completing corking process.
Store in bottles with the NECK and CORK at the lowest point — in other words, using the old wine drinker toast of — “Bottoms UP”
This will prevent corks from drying out — and thus allowing an alien bacteria to get in and turning it to Vinegar – or simply going bad.
Red wine is made from red or Black grapes
This is done after fermentation by adding black skins into the wine after the first decanting.
(if this was done before they would simply turn brown along with all the residue)
White wine can be made from either black or white grapes. It’s simply because the procedure I have just mentioned is omitted.
As for wine making you sick. — It most certainly will if it’s gone bad or contaminated with an unknown bacteria.
Good Luck.
I’m looking for a guide or tutorial (with pictures) for how to make wine at home. I remember seeing one that used milk jugs, water balloons, and juice concentrate but I can’t find it. Small-scale, 2 gallons at the max.

I’m not looking to make any quality wine, my budget is extremely limited and I’d rather make it easy.
If you want to make wine, you may as well make something worth drinking. Get CJJ Berry’s book First Steps in Home Winemaking. Except for not requiring food-grade plastic, his instructions are good and some of the recipes are outstanding.
I live in Kuwait and want to make wine (with alcohol) out of non-alcoholic wine. I heard I can just add yeast (or yeast and sugar). Does anyone have experience with trying this?
I know I can make wine out of grape juice but want to try it with non-alcoholic wine so it has more flavor and body.
Any help would be appreciated.
First, check the ingredients. If it contains any preservative, don’t waste your time. If not, add sugar and a yeast such as Montrachet.
If you want more flavor and body from juice, you may be able to do this by adding concentrate or frozen juice to your grape juice.
I am looking at getting a home kit for making wine. I am growing my grapes at home as well. If I wanted to make/bottle/store is there any law I have to follow?
Also, what if one wants to buy it?
If you make it for yourself, and consume it yourself, give it away, you need no license.
If you market and sell it, you will most likely need to acquire a license. The city wants their “take”, there may be ordinances involved, health and safety factors, and the IRS ALWAYS has interest in any income we produce.

I live in southern Illinois, which I believe is zone 6. I’ve never grown grapes before but i’ve made wine several times. What are the easiest grapes to grow to make a good sweet wine? Any additional tips would be great too!
Just buy some from the store.
